Fenway High School's Internship Program:
Each year, all seniors at Fenway High School explore potential future career paths through Fenway's business and career preparatory class offered through the Ventures Program. As students research what skills and education are required to be come a nurse, a lawyer, and architect or the CEO of YOUR company, they practice professionalism skills, write cover letters and produce top-notch resumes at school in their Ventures classroom. Part of this learning process necessitates experiential learning: the opportunity to spend time outside of the school building, in the community, on site at a business or organization here in Boston learning what it's like to be successful IN the workplace (in other words, practicing their skills in real life).
Fenway's seniors are required to complete a six-week, full-time internship during the spring. This on-site learning experience exposes students to the workplace far before they have to make important and informed decisions about their college majors and entry-level jobs. Fenway's success in preparing students for the future is not possible without support from members of the community like YOU who take the time to invite our students into your work environments to mentor and educate them on what it's really like to be that nurse, lawyer, architect or CEO they hope to become.
Please help one of Fenway's 68 seniors this year by inviting them to your workplace and showing them what it's like to do YOUR job.
How can you help?
Host a senior for a six-week Internship. We ask you to:
- Identify project-based work spanning six weeks for the student (start date: March 29, 2010)
- Provide supervision and a work-space for the student 30 hours per week for six week
- Not pay students during their 180 hours but feel free to hire them afterwards! Internships are unpaid
- Allow students report back to school for a seminar class one day each week for an hour
- Agree to sign necessary paperwork and a weekly log of hours verifying time completed
- Read through the Supervisor's guide and bring any questions you may have to the school contact person
- Attend an orientation breakfast in late-March to learn how to successful host and supervise your student (not required)
- Attend a celebratory breakfast at the completion of internship, hosted at Fenway High School (Date TBA)
